Is Pastor Jones More Honest Than Evangelicals?

A tweep I follow posted a link this morning to blogger Elizabeth Esther.  She challenges the hypocrisy of Evangelical’s and their outcry of Jones’ practice. In short, she says

Sure, most evangelicals share their beliefs in ways that are less offensive than Pastor Jones. But make no mistake: the entire sub-culture of evangelicalism is built on the foundation of what Pastor Jones has aptly called: sending a message….

OK, I know. It’s not fair to compare a Gospel crusade to a Koran-burning bonfire. I guess I’m just trying to point out that pomp & circumstance are very much a part of American evangelicalism. It sorta sickens me to see evangelicals pretending like they are SO DIFFERENT from Pastor Jones.

They’re not. Maybe they’re more polite about it. But Pastor Jones is more honest.

It often seems to me that for many of these evangelicals, sending a messageis more important than being the message. This is why being a Christian in America isn’t so much about feeding the hungry and clothing the naked as it is about voting Republican and attending a mega-church.

Although she makes some sweeping statements (that she addresses in some of her comment responses), she brings up a significant point in my opinion. Evangelicalism -in the west- is caught up in telling someone about Jesus, the Gospel, etc. It becomes a discussion based in reason, which the entire field of apologetics has been borne. Evangelicalism, however, has been lax about living it out. At least in some of the freeing in ways that Jesus proclaims himself in the book of Luke:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Jesus preaches the gospel? Hmmm. Is it the same “gospel” evangelicals share with someone? Is it even “shared” in the same way?
