Week 7 – Cultural Studies: Barker; Chp. 13

In reading about youth culture, I was intrigued by the argument of McRobbie and Garber (Barker: 385) around the lack of adequate and appropriate studies on feminine youth culture. Up to that point in the chapter, I had been reading “youth culture” through male eyes, and reading only about the male subject that was being presented. The feminine was under represented, and remained so as Barker cited the male subcultures through the rest of the chapter. There was little attention given to more specific feminine expressions aside from the nod to the genderized roles already mentioned.
