Week 2 – Models…Theology: Bevans; Chapter 2

In the transitional and challenging time the people of Jesus seem to be in right now around the connection of culture and expressive faith, Bevan’s offers us a look beyond the “culturally relevant” cry of our current world-view.  Culture is part of our need for contextualization, “but it is not the only factor to be taken into consideration.”  (:25)  He proposes that there are in fact three parts:  cultural identity, popular religiosity, and social change.  (:26)  This was the first I’ve seen or heard of something that articulates a contextualization in this manner; I find it has great value and weight in our communal faith expression.  It gives a greater lens with which to maintain a faith while being aware of compromising faith.

  1. “He proposes that there are in fact three parts: cultural identity, popular religiosity, and social change. ” I agree I do think that’s a helpful way to articulate it.
