Week 1 – Theology and Popular Culture: Cobb, Chp. 1 (Popular Culture)

Media has become so dominant in our culture that it has brought about a change in the manner with which we understand it. While it remains communication and dissemination of information, goods, entertainment, etc. in various forms, it has become an entity that is self sufficient and is actually a sphere of our culture: the datasphere. Where in the past media was the carrier of the message, it has now become the message; further, it actually has now begun to shape the lives of its receivers to process, catagorize, and shape their lives at the whims of the media itself. (:39) I had never thought of the pervasiveness of media in this way; I have been a sheep.
