Week 10 – Ashcroft (1st Ed.): The Alchemy of English; Kachru

In India, the issue of language in its power has wrought unusual results. English, as the language of the colonizer, seems to have become the language of those in the higher castes and a means of othering. But it has also become a neutral language that allows for communication without some of the very connotations that some of the dialects of the caste system negatively communicate. This I suppose, is one of the first real concrete examples of a colonizing consequence having some positive results in a former colony.
