Week 4 – Wednesday

Spivak’s writings and their initial hopeless tenor perhaps speak into the reality of our world, and as Ryan has spoken the last couple of times, fall under the principalities and powers Paul talked about. I found myself struggling in that tension: how does one go about sensitively draw out the discourse that is oppressive without being part of the oppressive discourse? (Assuming one is part of the empire promulgating said discourse.) Further, what about those that truly have no voice? The mentally impaired beyond the ability to communicate? The severely autistic? I think of the movie Awakenings, and how these group of folks couldn’t operate in life until a medication was found that could treat them. So, after all they could speak for themselves, but it took someone else acting on their behalf. How does that work in this way? Perhaps I’m making it more complicated than it needs to be…
