Week 3 – Wednesday

I think one of the most significant things for me in class today was the continued concrete examples of our/my universalism. Namely cartography: it never occurred to me that Europe is often in the center of the map, that the distortion in the most common of maps used made the Northern hemisphere huge (subsequently dwarfing the perceived sizes of Africa, South America, etc), and that the prime meridian runs through Greenwich, England. So, latitude is based on the rotation of the earth and what part is exposed to the sun, but longitude (and our concept of time that we export to others culturally), is based on the British empire. God save the Queen!

  1. Yeah, I think this was pretty significant for a lot of us.
