Week 1 – Response to Terry’s Blog

Terry, I too was blown away by the way mathematics has been shaped by culture.  I was tracking right with Bishop in his introduction:  triangles are 180 degrees, and that is not a contextual truth but an abstraction from culture, subjectivity, etc.  Then the brick hit:  400 different mathematical worldviews alone in Papua New Guinea!  Incredible!  And to further think, that as you have already lamented, that the west has used the Arabic numbering and base 10 system as a way of colonization and forced subjectivity to an empire’s system. . .
